March 14th became no ordinary day. It soon became National Walkout Day where students, teachers, and staff everywhere would walk out of school in honor of the people we lost to shootings and gun violence, especially the most recent shooting that occurred in Florida. The Florida shooting is a truly heartbreaking tragedy that occurred on Valentine’s Day; yet, shootings like this have happened before. Shootings have occurred all across the U.S., which has caused fear among students and parents everywhere. Shootings have occurred in schools, marathons, restaurants, and places you would never even think of. Though this shooting was tragic and we lost 17 people to this shooting, there have been worse times which is sad to say.

In 2016 at Pulse nightclub, about 50 people were killed and 53 were injured. In 2007 at Virginia Tech, there were about 32 people killed and 17 injured; these are two of the biggest shootings to ever occur in the U.S.. It is truly devastating that it has taken the people of this country this long to want to make a change after having about 1,624 shootings in 1,860 days. 1,624 mass shootings in a number of days is just far too many lives risked and lost. Change needs to happen in our country and we hope that one day change will happen.

Today we remember those live who were lost when they were just beginning. We rang a bell and gave a rose for each life we lost recently in Florida. If only we could do more for those hurting. All we can do now is hope and pray for a change. It is time for the U.S. to make a change. We are MSDA strong, but we can be USA strong. For all those in pain who lost a family member, friend, or anyone in your life you lost from a shooting: stay strong and hopefully change will be happening soon to protect you as well as everyone you love.
