LOS ANGELES—There is recent talk of a new app that is intended to squash its biggest competitor, Bitmoji, and the app hasn’t even launched yet. 700,000 people and counting have been on the waitlist to download it for quite some time.

So, what is it? Genies is a startup created by Akash Nigam, a graduate from the University of Michigan, who was looking for a better way to animate conversation and news while making it widely available through social media networking apps.

The first step is to simply download the app. Once the app is installed, you will personalize your very own avatar. Unlike its other competitors, Genie is generated by a personality test you take when the app is first downloaded.  After the test is complete you mimic the avatar to look like you. Once the final steps are complete, you have the freedom to control your genie as you please.

“Your Genie is the star of the show. The script is whatever happens in the world that day,” Akash Nigam publicly announced in an interview with TechCrunch.

This highly-awaited app is being backed by some of the most talked about names in the music, sports, and Youtube industries. Shawn Mendes, Russell Westbrook, and Jake Paul have all provided funding .

“The app has had over 15 million dollars in funding, the app itself is valued at 100 million dollars,” according to TechCrunch.

The influencers allowed the app to target an older audience, who mostly use apps like Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some of the funds allowed for the creation of focus groups. These teen and college-filled groups were able to try out the app and give their very own feedback to better the app for its users. It is planned to launch in early November, but, will it live up to the hype?
