The Umbrella Academy is a comic book series created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bà. Netflix adapted the comic books for television and it was released February 15.

The series begins in 1989 when 43 babies are born to random women around the world who were not pregnant the day before. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, an eccentric billionaire, sets out to adopt as many children as possible. He turns the children into a team of superheroes through “the Umbrella Academy.”

The children are given numbers, one through seven, rather than names, but Grace, their robot mother, eventually names them Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, number Five (not given another name), Ben, and Vanya. Six of the children set out to fight crime and “save the world” but Vanya is kept separated from the others because she shows no signs of having powers.

In the present day, Luther is an astronaut, Diego is a vigilante, Allison is a famous actress, Klaus is a party boy with a drug addiction, Five has been missing for 17 years, Ben has passed away, and Vanya is a violinist. When their father dies, the family is brought together again and a series of secrets begin to unravel. Watch the Umbrella Academy on Netflix.
