In wake of International Women’s Month, the United States Women’s National Soccer Team has sued U.S. Soccer for gender discrimination on Friday, March 8.

The lawsuit was created by the players of the USWNT with their goal being the elimination of gender based discrimination in soccer. In the twenty five page document there are forty one complaints made, with all twenty eight of the current players listed as plaintiffs. The complaints include but are not limited to lacking medical treatment, coaching, poor quality fields, and significantly lower wages than the men’s national team despite having more success.

“Each of us is extremely proud to wear the United States jersey, and we also take seriously the responsibility that comes with that. We believe that fighting for gender equality in sports is a part of that responsibility. As players, we deserved to be paid equally for our work, regardless of our gender”, says Alex Morgan, a forward on the Women’s team.

The USWNT is considered the best women’s soccer team in the world, having won three World Cups, eight CONCACAF Gold Cups, four Olympic gold medals, and ten Algarve Cups. They are currently in training for the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France, starting on June 7th, which they are defending champions of and favored to win again.

US Soccer has yet to make a statement about the lawsuit. All the players are on the same page. They want change to be made and feel the only way for this to happen is by taking legal action.
