Met Gala Brings Extravagance and Artifice to NYC with “Camp” Theme

Monday, May 6, brought with it the fashion event of the year: the Met Gala, hosted at New York City’s own Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met Gala is an exclusive costume ball for A-List celebrities.

This year’s theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” was one of the broadest in Met Gala history. Unlike previous themes, such as last year’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” the camp theme is open to much interpretation. And no, it’s not camp like staying overnight in a tent with fishing gear. Camp basically means artificial, extravagant, over-the-top. Think old Lady Gaga. This is extremely fitting considering the co-chairs. First, Lady Gaga, queen of camp. Beside her, Harry Styles (another fantastic camp star). If you’re looking for more camp inspiration, turn to Styles’s recent tour outfits; or basically an endless collection of fun Gucci suits. Co-hosting with them were tennis star Serena Williams and Alessandro Michele of Gucci.

Each attendee was asked what camp meant to them.

“Camp is about enjoyment,” claimed Styles, when asked how he defines camp.

“You either are the art piece or you wear the art piece,” Cole Sprouse said while explaining what he learned from reading up on camp.

It is expected that every celebrity invited goes all out for their walk on the (this year, pink) carpet. Despite the encouraged over-the-top dress code, some tend to play it safe. Many, even this year when there were no restrictions on crazy, still showed up in plain suits. Some had a bit of flare and sparkle, but are not technically considered camp.

On a brighter note, others pulled out all the stops. Lady Gaga had four outfits layered on top of one another and a performance for the carpet which totaled about twelve minutes (and three commercial breaks for those like me watching on E! News).

Zendaya also had a bit of a performance, showing up in a drab gray dress that later lit up blue with a wave of her stylist/fairy godmother’s wand. To top it off, she left a transparent heel on the stairs.

The list of celebrity guests goes on and on. Shawn Mendes, two-thirds of the Jonas Brothers, Celine Dion, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, Kim Kardashian, Kacey Musgraves,  Kylie, Kendall, and Kris Jenner, James Charles, Billy Porter, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Jared Leto, Rami Malek, and so many more were in attendance. A variety of industries from fashion to film, music to television, and more were represented at the gala.

Despite the Met Gala just concluding, there have been speculations about next year’s theme. Thus far, my favorite is “climate change” where they want every celebrity to dress in eco-friendly clothing, or clothing made out of recycled or sustainable material, and have it themed around the Earth. Additionally, all the proceeds would be donated to climate relief efforts.

The gala debuted the Camp fashion exhibit at the Met museum, so if you get the chance, check it out! I know I cannot wait to. Now, I just need to figure out how to become famous enough to go to the Met Gala next year.
