Schitt’s Creek is the Quarantine Escape We All Need

Madison ’20 counts down the top ten episodes to raise your spirits.

Ever since quarantine began, it was hard to feel happy or excited about things. Everything that I was looking forward to — the end of senior year, senior week, graduation, prom, Disney — was snatched away. Everything I was excited about became uncertain. In the midst of all this, I began watching a show called Schitt’s Creek. Every episode was a 21 minute escape; it made me laugh and brightened up my mood instantly. So without further ado, here are ten episodes of Schitt’s Creek to pick you up when you’re feeling down.

1. Season 2 Episode 13, “Happy Anniversary”

This episode is the season finale of season 2. It is a very cute, feel good episode, with the whole Rose family coming together in the end. This is also the episode where Moira and Johnny celebrate their anniversary, and finally come to terms with their whole situation. It makes them realize who their true friends are and accept that they are not the same people they were before they lost all of their money.

2. Season 5 Episode 5, “Housewarming”

This is probably my favorite episode, and one of the funniest in the series. Patrick and David throw a housewarming party with a high school pajama party theme, while Moira and Johnny try to prove a point by taking care of Jocelyn and Roland’s baby. This episode is so funny that I had to pause it because I was laughing so hard. The spin the bottle scene is just priceless.

3. Season 4 Episode 6, “Open Mic” & Season 4 Episode 9, “The Olive Branch”

So this one is a two-parter. If you’ve ever watched Schitt’s Creek before, you’ll know why. The first is the episode that Patrick surprises David by singing “Simply the Best.” This is one of the more sentimental episodes in the series, which you can pretty much tell by looking at Moira and David’s faces. This episode shows just how good of a couple they are and how happy they make one another. The second episode is when David lip syncs “Simply the Best” to Patrick to make up with him after getting into a fight. SPOILER ALERT: “Simply the Best” ended up being sung at their wedding, and for good reason.

4. Season 6 Episode 13, “Happy Ending”

This is the series finale of Schitt’s Creek. It is another feel good, emotional episode because of David and Patrick’s wedding. It shows just how much everyone has changed since the pilot; they are all going their separate ways, not afraid to split up and be on their own. Also, Moira officiates the wedding, dressed like some version of the Pope, so that makes things more interesting.

5. Season 5 Episode 11, “Meet the Parents”

This is the episode where David’s boyfriend Patrick comes out to his parents. Patrick’s parents accepted him outright, telling him that he is the most important person in the world and all they want is for him to be happy. Unless you’re heartless, it’s impossible not to get misty-eyed from this scene.

6. Season 3 Episode 13, “Grad Night”

Towards the middle of season 3, Alexis reveals that she never finished high school and decides to go back to get her diploma. This is the episode where she graduates. Alexis tells her parents not to go, and they sorta listen. The reason I chose this episode is because Moira ends up surprising Alexis there after all, and you can tell by the look on her face how happy she is to see her mother. This is also the episode where David and Patrick go out on their first date, if the graduation wasn’t a good enough reason to watch.

7. Season 2 Episode 12, “Lawn Signs”

This episode reveals an underrated moment for David. The Blouse Barn, where he worked at the time, is being paid to change its name by a larger company, and David realizes that they are being given a lot less money then they should. He and Alexis pretend to be lawyers and fight the company for the money that they deserve– and they actually get it. This proves to David that he is smart and capable and can do anything he sets his mind to. Also, Moira steals her own lawn signs while running against Jocelyn for town council. This show is really just grade A comedy.

8. Season 4 Episode 12, “Singles Week”

Throughout the past few seasons, Alexis and Ted have worked together, and in the episode prior to “Singles Week” Alexis tells Ted she loves him, and he doesn’t say it back. In this episode, Ted surprises Alexis and they get together. Patrick and David also declare their love for one another. So if you are looking for a feel good episode, put this one at the top of your list.

9. Season 5 Episode 13, “The Hike”

Patrick and David are one of the main couples on Schitt’s Creek. Over the last three seasons we’ve seen how Patrick and David’s relationship developed, and in this episode Patrick makes David go on a hike and proposes to him. This, yet again, is a feel good episode (What can I say? It’s really a feel good comedy.). Patrick’s proposal makes your heart swell no matter how many times you watch it.

10. Season 5 Episode 14, “Life is a Cabaret”

Ever since the first episode, we see how Stevie is more of a quiet, reserved person. In this episode she really breaks out of her shell, playing the lead role in Cabaret, which she absolutely crushes. You can also see her and David’s friendship develop throughout the seasons and when David tells her about him and Patrick’s engagement, she rushes to pick up her gift to him which is towels, saying that when David and Patrick move in together she won’t be there to give him towels anymore.

Honorable Mentions:

Season 5 Episode 9, “ The M.V.P.” (Just because David plays baseball.)

Schitt's Creek

Season 5 Episode 8, “ The Hospies” (Just because Alexis sings “Little Bit Alexis.”)
