March For Our Lives New York brought people from all over the area together in solidarity to march for an important cause. I attended the event with Morgan Clifford, who took the amazing pictures for this story. Members of the MSDA Class of 2017 were also in attendance, including Meghan Murphy, Cat Dixon, Ciara Negron, Cat O’Brien, and Gina Fujii.

The march began at 12 p.m., but a rally was scheduled to precede the event. Because the crowd was so large, organizers moved the start from 72nd Street to 77th Street. While waiting to take our first steps, we were interviewed by Sandy Hook Promise who asked us about school safety and the impact of the Sandy Hook shooting on our lives.  It was a long walk from 77th to 42nd. All the while, participants kept signs held high and voices loud. On the way, we passed the Trump Tower and Hotel where people chanted “Shame!” and “Vote them out!”

The atmosphere of the March was different from anything I have ever experienced; it was amazing to see such a large group of people voicing their opinions and speaking out for change. There were so many young people present at the march which proves how aware our generation is and I am proud to have been part of such a historical and important event.

There was never a moment where I felt unsafe or things got too rowdy. It was strictly a peaceful protest against gun violence. Hopefully, this march is a giant step in the direction of peace and safety in our schools.
