Croatia Dealing With Overcrowding Thanks to ‘Game of Thrones’

Over the past few years, Croatia has seen its tourists numbers soar, thanks to popular TV show, Game Of Thrones. The last season of the show, which aired April 14, 2019 and ended May 19, 2019, was partially filmed in the beautiful city of Dubrovnik, an already popular tourist destination because of its natural beauty and history.

The increasing number of tourists is greatly impacting the economy. However, not everyone is happy about this. Dubrovnik’s mayor, Mato Frankovic, is concerned with overcrowding lessening the beauty of the city. He plans to only allow 4,000 people a day into the heart of the tourist attraction, the old city, which lies within the city’s Medieval walls. He admitted to the Telegraph in an interview that his plan would hurt the local economy in the short term, but it would help in the long term.

“I am not here to make people happy, but to make the quality of life better,” Frankovic said. “Some cruise lines will disagree with what I’m saying but my main goal is to ensure quality for tourists and I cannot do it by keeping the situation as it is.”
A new spike in the number of Game Of Thrones tourist shops has created a problem for the city as well. Some people feel as though it takes away from the beauty of the historical area.

While an influx of tourist money is great for a small country, when it happens too fast, it can be hard for the government to react in time to keep everything contained. The gorgeous city of Dubrovnik, as well as other tourist spots in Croatia, has led the country to become one of the top 5 travel destinations in all of Europe.

Tourist destinations growing in popularity because of TV and movies is not a new trend, it has been happening for years. For example, Outlander increased the popularity of Scotland as a tourist destination. However, Croatia is one of the only destinations that has a problem with overcrowding as a result.
